A dementia diagnosis changes everything—not just for the person diagnosed, but for their entire family. Understanding what’s ahead can make the journey more manageable and help you plan the right level of care at the right time.
What is Dementia?
Dementia is an umbrella term for a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities severely enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause, accounting for 60–80% of cases. Other types include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia.
The Three Stages
- Early Stage — The person may still be fairly independent but experiences memory lapses, difficulty finding words, and challenges with complex tasks like managing finances. This is often when homecare support begins — helping with medication management, meal preparation, and light housekeeping.
- Middle Stage — This is typically the longest stage. Confusion increases, daily tasks become more difficult, and the person may wander or become agitated. 24/7 supervision may become necessary, and specialised dementia care becomes critical.
- Late Stage — The person loses the ability to respond to their environment, carry on conversations, and control movement. Care is focused on comfort, dignity, and quality of life.
